I got this book of painter Maurice Denis‘ photographs at the Musée d’Orsay a couple of years ago in Paris. They are very Summer Friday. His paintings express his interest in the flatness of the picture plane, line and pure color shapes and his photographs from 1901 (left) and 1911 (right) show a similar concern in their blocky-shaped contrasting areas. The angular poses of the adults against the free-wheeling postures of the children are particularly fantastic (note to self: rip this idea off).
Two asides:
In later life he devoted himself to religious paintings so this seems like a good place to note that my Pentax 645 broke during this trip while shooting a priest in Notre Dame!
These pictures + downers + nostalgia + The Burden of the South = Sally Mann?
