I woke up before dawn in Tulum, Mexico while staying there during Thanksgiving to watch the sunrise. It was unbelievably beautiful. I’ve only been on the beach with a camera at dawn once before (Coney Island for a shoot a couple of years ago). I’m hoping and praying everyday to become a better photographer and I think these are much better photos than the ones I took then. In fact I’m pretty happy with them and I think it’s a decent start to a project.
One of the ideas that propelled me to become a photographer was the thought that I could turn my weaknesses–bad depth perception/mild A.D.D./slight dyslexia (undiagnosed but by this list of symptoms I just read says I’m screwed)–into strengths. I also thought that having spent seven years looking at photos every day for work, while Assistant AD at American PHOTO Magazine, might have trained my eye (those seven years certainly trained my ass to yearn for a desk chair-less future). I didn’t realize that the job “photographer” is still kind of a desk job but every once in a while I make it into the greater world and if I get up early enough or the weather is weird enough it looks great. Here’s what Tulum looks like if you get up early enough (you can thank me in person for not taking pictures of the naked German hippie family taking pictures of themselves).
