it into The New York Times Magazine! I took the photos to accompany <a title="A Sauce Worth Slaving Over" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/magazine/eat-vegetable-tempura-sauce.html" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/magazine/eat-vegetable-tempura-sauce.html?referer=');"><br />
Mark Bittman&#8217;s column</a> about the East Village Japanese restaurant <a title="Kajitsu" href="http://kajitsunyc.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/kajitsunyc.com/?referer=');">Kajitsu</a>. Somewhere, somehow the photo gods smiled on me&#8230; Evidence below:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.johnvonpamer.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/vonPamer_NewYorkTimes_Kajitsu.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1489" title="vonPamer_NewYorkTimes_Kajitsu" src="http://www.johnvonpamer.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/vonPamer_NewYorkTimes_Kajitsu.jpg" alt="" width="620" height="424" /></a></p>
<p>My <a title="Castor &amp; Pollux" href="http://castorandpolluxstore.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/castorandpolluxstore.com/?referer=');">wife</a> has twice tried to get into the restaurant for dinner and it looks like we&#8217;re going to have to wait even longer as Chef Masato Nishihara&#8217;s food was both insanely delicious, beautifully prepared and, there&#8217;s no denying, that&#8217;s a very nice press clipping.</p>
<p>A very grateful thank you goes out to Photo Editor Luise Stauss (whom I met through Natasha Lunn)&#8230; in my book they drink free!</p>

<p>This pic is from Thanksgiving. It took me a while to get it up but it brings back fond memories of overeating, long walks, apple trees, and a sense of wide open spaces. My wife wrote about Thanksgiving vacation with pictures that aren&#8217;t up here at her Castor &amp; Pollux blog <a title="C&amp;P loving" href="http://www.castorandpolluxstore.com/loving/thanksgiving-at-christmas/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.castorandpolluxstore.com/loving/thanksgiving-at-christmas/?referer=');">Loving</a>.</p>
<p>The second is also for the Loving blog and part of The Ladies of Castor &amp; Pollux series she does. Below is one is of store neighbor extraordinaire Louise Eastman.</p>

One of my favorite projects is a section of her  <a title="Loving" href="http://www.castorandpolluxstore.com/loving/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.castorandpolluxstore.com/loving/?referer=');">blog</a> (<a title="Castor &amp; Pollux old blog" href="http://castorandpolluxstore.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/castorandpolluxstore.blogspot.com/?referer=');">old blog here</a>) for her store <a title="Castor &amp; Pollux" href="http://www.castorandpolluxstore.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.castorandpolluxstore.com/?referer=');">Castor &amp; Pollux</a>.</p>
<p>She often leads by example (e.g she had a blog way before I did). I remain unconvinced in regards to twitter but she does that as well. It was through watching her blog grow that I decided to start this one. The itch possibly started with The Ladies of Castor &amp; Pollux project. The &#8220;ladies&#8221; are a group of customers she has met through the store. They are friends, business acquaintances, and just plain cool people. She asks them some questions and I take a picture of them. It is simple and I love working on it with her.<a title="no. 9 interiors" href="http://www.no9interiors.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.no9interiors.com/?referer=');"><br />

One of the great things about being a photographer is meeting new people. Here&#8217;s proof: I had never met someone from Siberia. I can now check that off my to do list. Alya grew up an hour helicopter ride(!) away from the city of <a title="Tyumen" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyumen" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyumen?referer=');">Tyumen.</a> Her parents worked for the party developing new land and she lived there until she was six. When Alya mentioned Siberia I was kind of imaging Luc Delahaye&#8217;s Winterreise (I can&#8217;t find a good link but definitely worth searching out&#8230; It looks like I should of bought it when I had the chance: the paperback is now $80). Suspiciously all the photos on wikipedia are blue skies in summer! Maybe Siberia is like one of those cool towns on the West Coast where the locals tell you that it sucks living there so you never move there. Maybe we should all move to Siberia. Brooklyn IS overpriced. But here&#8217;s a weird googling monkey fact I came across: &#8220;Siberia is so immense that a person standing on the beach in Maine is closer to Moscow than a person standing on the eastern coast of Siberia.&#8221; Mind blower, no?</p>
<p><a href="http://www.johnvonpamer.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Alya-NYTimes1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-76" title="Alya-NYTimes" src="http://www.johnvonpamer.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/Alya-NYTimes1.jpg" alt="" width="588" height="564" /></a></p>
<p>They are also running some <a title="Say it with Carmel" href="http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/08/sticky-sweets-say-it-with-caramel/?ref=t-magazine" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/08/sticky-sweets-say-it-with-caramel/?ref=t-magazine&amp;referer=');">food photos I took.</a> It was ice cream from <a title="MilkMade" href="http://www.milkmadeicecream.com/index.html" target="_self" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.milkmadeicecream.com/index.html?referer=');">MilkMade</a>, and yes I got to eat it! It was on the far side of good/bordering on genius. Weirdly, they deliver. I was a bike messenger in DC during college so this I like. If you&#8217;re young, fearless, and full of cajones maybe this is the job for you. I liked it a lot&#8230; until the second winter when I decided that maybe used book store clerk was slightly safer. I did develop a taste for Don DeLillo though so maybe not. His stuff will definitely make you paranoid.</p>

<p>I like typing that&#8230; it makes me feel good.</p>
<p>The photos are of Graceland (we are on a Memphis jag here, but this one is in Williamsburg, Brooklyn). They give haircuts and tattoos and played excellent music while I was there.</p>

The content is based on a selection of artists, illustrators, photographers and designers of all around the world, displaying the global diversity which is to be found in every discipline.&#8221;</p>
<p>They have included some beautiful photography by <a title="Robin Schwartz" href="http://robinschwartz.net/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/robinschwartz.net/?referer=');"> Robin Schwartz </a>and <a title="Kim Holtermand" href="http://www.holtermand.dk/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.holtermand.dk/?referer=');">Kim Høltermand</a>. I also think the installation/design/photography yarnworks by <a title="Sebastien Preschoux" href="http://www.m-vs-m.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.m-vs-m.com/?referer=');">Sebastien Preschoux</a> are worth checking out.</p>
<p>It is a (70 meg+) download that opens in it&#8217;s own window, turns pages like a magazine, and is sharply designed. One of my images closes out their first issue and I am quite happy to be included! You can get it here: <a title="Carne Magazine" href="http://www.carnemag.com/" target="_blank" onclick="urchinTracker('/outgoing/www.carnemag.com/?referer=');">www.carnemag.com</a></p>
